Armature Overcurrent
Armature phase current has exceeded the programmed threshold or internal current limit for more than 200ms. This fault indicates excessive load torque demand, mechanical jam, or thyristor/power stage degradation in the main drive converter.
Error Code
F7.1
Severity
Fault
Equipment
DC Drive
Manufacturer
Siemens
Drive trips immediately upon start or during acceleration with red LED indicator on control panel
Motor hums but shaft does not rotate; load appears mechanically seized or binding
Armature current meter reading exceeds 150% of rated drive current before fault trip
Soft-start contactor chatters repeatedly or fails to hold; drive resets when load reduced
Distinctive burnt smell or visible scorching near main power terminals or thyristor heatsinks
Fault code F7.1 displayed on keypad with flashing amber status LED
Mechanical jam or excessive load torque (gearbox binding, conveyor blockage, seized bearing)
Thyristor gate drive circuit failure causing improper commutation or partial thyristor turn-on
Shorted armature winding or inter-turn insulation breakdown in motor field coil
Supply voltage imbalance or phase loss reducing available DC bus voltage and current regulation
Defective current sense resistor or shunt producing incorrect feedback signal to current regulator
Improper current limit parameter setting or corrupted firmware calibration values
Verify mechanical load is free: manually rotate motor shaft by hand (disconnect coupling). Listen for bearing noise or feel binding resistance. Check conveyor/pulley systems for obstacles.
Measure DC bus voltage with multimeter at drive terminals with no load. Should read within ยฑ10% of nameplate (typically 230V, 400V, or 460V DC). Confirm supply phase sequence and absence of phase loss.
Test armature winding insulation resistance using megohmmeter (1000V test): phase-to-ground should read >100 Mฮฉ. If <10 Mฮฉ, motor winding is shorted and requires replacement or rewind.
Inspect thyristor assembly heatsink for burnt components, cracked solder joints, or gate drive circuit board damage. Check gate driver optocoupler LEDs for glow using infrared camera (indicates continuous current draw).
Measure current sense shunt voltage drop across terminals at rated motor current (should match 50-100mV specification in manual). If measurement is erratic or zero, shunt is open-circuit; replace sensing resistor.
Reset drive parameter: Access menu โ Current Limit adjustment (typically parameter P07 or I_max) and verify setting is 120-130% of motor nameplate current. Reprogram if corrupted.
If mechanical and electrical checks pass, power-cycle drive and attempt soft-start with no load. Gradually increase load while monitoring current. If fault reoccurs at low torque, thyristor or gate driver circuit requires replacement.
Perform thyristor static test with dedicated thyristor tester or Multimeter continuity mode (thyristor should show forward drop 0.6-0.8V in forward direction, open circuit reverse). Replace defective thyristors as matched pairs.
Safety First: Always isolate power and follow LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures before working on electrical components. If unsure, contact a certified repair technician.
