Communication Timeout - Fieldbus Interface
E4001 indicates loss of communication between the Lenze PLC and connected fieldbus devices (CANopen, PROFIBUS, or EtherCAT) for longer than the configured watchdog timeout interval. The PLC has detected that periodic heartbeat/polling signals from slave devices are absent, triggering protective isolation to prevent unsafe machine states.

PLC display shows E4001 error code with fieldbus indicator LED flashing red
Connected servo drives, IO modules, or VFDs become unresponsive and enter safe-state halt
Communication status indicator on fieldbus interface card cycles between green and red every 2-3 seconds
Real-time data exchange halts; analog/digital values from remote devices freeze at last known state
System automatically shuts down connected motors after configurable timeout (typically 100-500ms)
Event log timestamp correlates with sudden loss of network packets on fieldbus analyzer
Broken or loose fieldbus cable connection between PLC fieldbus port and first device node
Corroded or damaged fieldbus connector pin contacts causing intermittent signal loss
Defective fieldbus communication card (CANopen/PROFIBUS module) with failed transceiver IC
Slave device powered down, reset, or experiencing internal watchdog trip during communication cycle
Excessive EMI/RFI interference from nearby high-power motor drives or welding equipment affecting signal integrity
Fieldbus termination resistor (120ฮฉ for CANopen) disconnected or failed on last node in network
Power cycle the PLC and all fieldbus devices in sequence (PLC first, then each slave device) to reset communication stack and verify normal restart sequence
Visually inspect all fieldbus cable connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or visible damage; reseat connectors firmly with audible click; test connector strain relief
Use a multimeter to measure DC resistance across fieldbus signal lines (CAN_H to CAN_L should read 60ฮฉ nominal when all terminators present); check for open circuits or shorts
Connect fieldbus diagnostic analyzer (CANopen monitor/PROFIBUS tester) to the network to capture packet loss patterns and identify which slave device drops communication first
Access PLC configuration software (Lenze Engineering Environment or equivalent) to verify watchdog timeout parameter setting (increase from default 200ms to 500ms if unstable network suspected) and confirm baud rate matches all devices
Replace the fieldbus communication card module if analyzer confirms PLC is transmitting but receiving no responses from any slave device, indicating internal card failure
Inspect and replace damaged fieldbus cable with shielded twisted-pair CANopen/PROFIBUS certified cable; ensure shield grounding at one end only to prevent ground loops
Check slave device firmware versions and update if available; verify each device responds to PLC node ID polling and manually reset any devices stuck in error state
Safety First: Always isolate power and follow LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures before working on electrical components. If unsure, contact a certified repair technician.
